What is the difference between porn and erotica?

Once again, operational definitions are in order.

Pornography: visual, aural and print media designed to create sexual excitement.

Erotica: Literature or art intended to arouse sexual desire.

So what’s the difference? That someone somewhere has attributed artistic merit to the medium used to arouse sexual desire. That’s pretty much it.

But who cares? Both are used to arouse sexual desire, aren’t they?

Erotica’s number one example is the book “Kama Sutra.” Written in India in the second century AD by Sanskrit written by the scholar Mallanāga Vātsyāyana.

The giant book has ten chapters on stimulation of desire, types of embraces, caressing and kisses, marking with nails, biting and marking with teeth, on copulation (positions), slapping by hand and corresponding moaning, virile behavior in women, superior coition and oral sex, preludes and conclusions to the game of love. It describes 64 types of sexual acts, with illustrations like below:

So, the Kama Sutra is not intended to simply arouse, but to teach sexual intercourse methods and other desirable human behavior.
